Fascinating Incite into the world of BDSM

"OK, so I like to read about stuff other than Norwegian crime thrillers and this is certainly in the other category. The writing is well done, the imagery truly fantastic and it makes a great conversation piece on the coffee table!

There seems to be a never ending supply of new books about BDSM and fetish lifestyles but most follow the same of formula of how I was a nice girl who ended up whipping men. This is no such book. It takes it from a very different viewpoint of why men want to be treated the way they do by a dominatrix. It does not set out to explain it, rationalize it or anything so deep. It just sets out, very well, to allow you the reader to read in men's words why they seek these services.

If you're looking for a biography, this is not the book for you. If you interested in reading why men do this, then this is a pretty good place to start."

Continues the Classic

The Snowman animation is a yearly event in Europe - something kids all look forward to and a nostalgic part of childhood for adults. This book continues the story, using the same style and feel from the original 1982 book.

Story: A boy is mourning the loss of his dog when he finds a photograph of another boy with his snowman. Using the image as inspiration, he builds another snowman and also a snow dog. Together, they have an adventure, flying and exploring.

My daughter loves the cartoon and enjoyed the chance to continue the story. We had the soundtrack music from the TV special and she played that while reading to complete the experience.

The story is bookended by two small tragedies. Although they are not dwelled upon, sensitive children may find that sad. The art is very faithful to the original though this book has far more words than the original (I would have liked to see fewer words, actually, and to let the art speak more).

In all, another children's classic and I'm glad we have a chance to continue the story. Reviewed from an ARC.

Disappointing sequel

I was disappointed. Yes, the illustrations were charming and consistent with the original. The story was fine, too. But it was not at all what I expected -- the whole story was told with words! How had no one mentioned this? The unique quality of the original was that it was told without words. Children too young to read, or not yet speaking in sentences, could enjoy the story. Now it's merely ordinary.

Not a wonderful sequel

I should have read the description more carefully, to learn that this is NOT a Raymond Briggs book but rather "based on characters" created by Briggs in "The Snowman." The story begins with a child moving to a new home and his dog dying (on the second page of text!) It ends with the boy and his new dog kneeling in sorrow in the snow where his snowman had melted. What a bummer of a story! Briggs created his classic picture book without words, leaving to the imagination of the child (or adult) to create the details. In the Snowdog parody, each illustration is explained to the reader, with nothing left to the imagination. Much of the story is repetition of Briggs' original book. Why the death of a pet was a necessary beginning to the book is beyond me. I would not purchase this book again.

The edible species dealt with in this work include to a larger extent lesser-known, wild and underutilized crops and also common and widely grown crops that are consumed as fruits, vegetables, culinary herbs, pulses, cereals, spices and condiments, root crops, beverages, mushrooms, edible oils and stimulants.

About the Author

TK Lim obtained his Bachelor and Masters in Agricultural Science from the University of Malaya and his PHD (Botanical Sciences) from the University of Hawaii. He worked in the University of Agriculture Malaysia for 20 years as a lecturer and Associate Professor; as Principal Horticulturist for 9 years for the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries, Darwin, Northern Territory; 6 years as Manager of the Asia and Middle East Team in Plant Biosecurity Australia, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Australia; and 4 years as Research Program Manger with the Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research (ACIAR), Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia before he retired from public service. He has published over a hundred scientific papers including several books: "Guava in Malaysia ' Production, Pest and Diseases", "Durian Diseases and Disorders", "Diseases of Mango in Malaysia", chapters in books, international refereed journals, conference proceedings (as editor) and technical bulletins in the areas of plant pathology, crop protection, horticulture, agronomy and quarantine science. He was also a reviewer of scientific papers for several international scientific journals. As Principal Horticulturist in Darwin, he and his team were instrumental in establishing the horticultural industry in the Northern Territory, Australia, especially on tropical fruits, vegetables, culinary herbs, spices / medicinal herbs and tropical flowers. During his tenure with Plant Biosecurity, he led a team responsible for conducting pest risk analyses and quarantine policy issues dealing with the import and export of plants and plant products into and out of Australia for the Middle East and Asian region. During his time with ACIAR, he oversee and managed international research and development programs in plant protection and horticulture covering a wide array of crops that included fruits, plantation crops, vegetables, culinary and medicinal herbs and spices mainly in southeast Asia and the Pacific. In the course of his 4 decades of working career he has travelled extensively worldwide to many countries in South Asia, East Asia, southeast Asia, Middle East, Europe, the Pacific Islands, USA and England, and also throughout Malaysia and Australia. Since his tertiary education days he always had a strong passion for crops and took an avid interest in edible and medicinal plants. Over the four decades, he has taken several thousands of photographs of common, known and lesser known edible, medicinal and non-medicinal plants, amassed local literature, local indigenous knowledge, books, and has developed and established close rapport with many local researchers, scientists, growers and farmers during the course of his work and travels. I have a pretty decent collection of books on plants and herbology, bushcraft, gardening, and naturopathic medicines. all the typical stuff and even a few that I'd call pretty decent. this series BLOWS THEM ALL AWAY!!

These series of books are hands down the most comprehensive resource ever written for edible plants. It give nice pictures and CURRENT information on chemical make-up, traditional uses, medical testing and studies, potential food, medicinal, industrial and commercial uses, growing info, distrbution, traditional names and about everything a person would need to know if they wanted to consume or use the plant.

There is a common name index and a scientific name index as well as an index of terms. this is the book we've all been waiting for and WELL WORTH the $200 price tag. simply a phenomenal addition to the library of any serious naturopath, doctor, or student of herbs and plants for practical use.

Falkowski is Board of Governors Professor in Environmental Biophysics and Molecular Ecology in the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences and the Department of Geological Sciences at Rutgers University. He has published numerous articles in "Science, Nature", and "Scientific American". John A. Raven is Boyd Baxter Professor of Biology at the University of Dundee, Scotland. advanced comprehension
By lost in a box
I am a fisheries major, so my interests do not lie in the plant realm, at all. The course I am enrolled in is the ecology of algae, and it doesn't follow along with the book very well, but that's not really the problem. Falkowski's writing is full of so much jargon, it is very difficult to follow. It was written more for a graduate level, which this course is in part, but way too many big words are planted into each individual idea, making it a tough book to learn from. However, this said, the data and graphs used are relevant and seem to be concise for the concepts, and mistakes seem to be at a minimum. I just feel it isn't very approachable for an undergraduate, unless they have the time to go back and google terms and piece it together for conceptual understanding.

photosynthesis from the subatomic to the global level

This is an extremely interesting and useful book for anyone working with or needing knowledge of photosynthesis in algae and other aquatic plants. The emphasis on biophysics in the first few chapters sheds a whole new light on the processes of photosynthesis at the most basic level. The information is general and does not give extensive citations to current scientific work, but rather focuses on the historical research leading to current understanding of photosynthesis.
My one criticism so far is with the number of errors, typographical and other, in some of the graphs and figures, making it quite hard to figure out just what is what. Hopefully there will be a revised edition which will correct these.

This definitive text on aquatic photosynthesis reads like a good novel. It takes the reader on a scientific adventure through the fundamentals of light absorption and the biophysics of the light reactions all the way to the biogeochemistry and evolution. Interspersed throughout the book are particularly interesting anecdotes about everything from the molecular clock to hole burning. A scientific tour de force!
