“La Tragedia del Circo”, narra la historia de Perfecta Jamia, hermosa joven, hija del curtidor pieles de Marrakech, la cual, debido a la deuda que había adquirido su padre con el prestamista de la ciudad, se vio forzado el anciano padre a dar como forma de pago a su hija, para que prestara sus servicios al circo, del cual el prestamista era dueño. La joven es adiestrada en las técnicas del trapecio y sin saberlo ella y los demás integrantes del circo, se alistan a embarcarse hacia el país de las esmeraldas, lugar donde hará el circo su presentación, para complacer a un alcalde militar que no está cuerdo. El capitán del barco, entrega a Perfecta Jamia y a su nueva amiga Antonija, el libro del “Escritor Sombrío”, para que ocupen su tiempo y su mente en algo diferente a ver mar por todos lados, las jóvenes entusiasmadas, empiezan la lectura de los relatos breves, sin saber que el circo y todos sus integrantes tienen su destino marcado en dichos cuentos. El horror embarga a Perfecta Jamia al final de la novela, al comprobar que ni el circo, ni sus integrantes, en realidad llegaron jamás al pueblo de Roldanillo y que ella es un fantasma, suplicando a su Dios, sin saber que a los muertos, nadie los escucha.
