This is a question to the sellers of this book. I was curious about whether this edition of this book is the original text, exactly as written by the great Mr. Hill, or one of those "revised and updated for the 21st century" types. There are plenty of "revised" editions available out there, but I'm more interested in hearing the words straight from the man's mouth (or pen, as it were), without someone else's ideas, about how they might be interpreted to apply to some contempoary examples, stuffed in there for show.

So, if you're a seller and happen to see this, I'd greatly apreciate any light you can shed, as I'd like to eventually aquire all of Mr. Hills books, but I'd prefer to end up with the ones that he wrote himself, as he wrote them.

The guide is written in the first person, and because it is authored by two people, this can sometimes lead to confusion. But when milking the gurus for knowledge, a little confusion will seem well worth it.

This book gave insights and time saving experiene!

I enjoyed this book's insights into the world of Pro and Amerature bicycle racing. This book is wonderful for someone who wants to improve their cycling beyond just riding. Connie and Davis share their numerous facinating experiences that can save you valuable time by not having to learn them the hard way. I especially enjoyed the chapter on junior racing, because I am one.

Good Training Manual

I am new to road cycling, and this book provides a good set of training plans for me. It would also be useful for a more advanced cyclist. Also, I like that the writers go back to basics, such as form, etc. A lot of people assume that they just get on a bike and ride, but as a runner who has had injuries in the past, form is very critical even in a simple sport.

The writing can be a little dry and clinical. I would have like to seen a little more info on common cycling injuries and how to handle. If you have ever read The Complete Idiot's Guide for Jogging and Running, Bill Rodgers does a great job in explaining common injuries to that sport and which ones are safe to contine training through, when to rest, how to take care of simple injuries, and when to see a doctor.

Also, if you are looking at new equipment, this book provides some timeless principles in selecting frame (geomoetry), components, etc. However, you will probably want something more up-to-date if you are looking for assistance with the latest products. This book was written in 1992.

I originally bought this book when it came out in 1992 after Bicycling Magazine had a blurb about it. It was Davis Phinney and Connie Carpenter telling you how to race- how could you pass it up? The book covers a lot subject matter and doesn't go very deep into any particular area, but as a quick all-in-one reference to get you moving in the right direction, it does well. Some of it reads like stereo instructions, but you don't need or want Hemingway's prose to learn bike fitting techniques or high speed cornering- just information-packed, step by step instruction. The bad part about this book is that it's dated. It's 20+ years old now and the information is based on 80s and very early 90s technology, so there is no mention of power meters, GPS technology, computers, or anything internet-based, heart rate is addressed, but not like it would be if the book were published today. So take it for what it is (a cycling book that was cutting edge, but now retro).
