Why Bother with A Snappy Title?

My wife and I picked up "The Underachiever's Manifesto" on a whim and read it together over a glass of wine. We're both a little driven, and we laughed aloud at the book's tongue-in-cheek advice about how to let someone else be excellent for a change. From the "blank pages" at the end to the obligatory top ten list to the quiz to determine your Underachiever's Quotient, the Manifesto is a delight. I'd write a longer review, but . . . just buy it and read it. Is that so hard?

Who Needs Therapy?

Get this book instead and save hundreds of dollars. I read this book in about 20 minutes and it changed my attitude completely. I loved it. It's hilarious. I wanted to buy the book in bulk so I can hand them out to my friends. It's the perfect gift for anyone with a sense of humor.

Unsuspectingly Brilliant

I've had this book for well over a year now and it seems to always help me calm down when I'm freaking out from taking on too much or pressuring myself to do too much. We create little prisons in our heads with all the things we "have to" do and be; The Underachiever's Manifesto is like shining a light on a bunch of shadows that weren't even true in the first place. It's like zen concentrate, powerfully packed in a few handsome pages. An absolutely kickass book. I don't often write reviews, but this book barely has any online presence so I wanted to share the fact that I think it's BRILLIANT.

Smith and Kraus, the drama student's best friend in the publishing world, once again mines the indefatigably rich and protean dramatic vein of the Actors Theatre of Louisville Humana Festival. The latest jewel in the "Contemporary Playwrights and Collections" series is this three-volume collection of 90 exemplary ten-minute plays, derived from Humana's 20-year-old National Ten-Minute Play Contest and selected by lead editor Dixon, who was an associate artistic director and literary manager at ATL for 16 years. What began as a quirky exercise in Polaroid playwrighting has evolved into a meaningful format, no less dramatically complete or serious for its time constraint. Nor is this form relegated only to unknown innovators, as attested by the contributions of such noted playwrights as Jane Martin, David Henry Hwang, Tina Howe, William Mastrosimone, Jon Jory, David Ives, and Craig Lucas. Arranged by gender groupings (plays for women, plays for men, plays for combinations, etc.), these volumes are particularly suited to acting students whose needs for relevant, contemporary, and age-appropriate scenic material is insatiable. Short is beautiful!

"30 Ten-Minute Plays for 2 Actors, from Actors Theatre of Louisville's National Ten-Minute Play Contest," edited by Michael Bigelow Dixon, Amy Wegener, and Karen C. Petruska, is an outstanding anthology dedicated to a very specific theatrical genre. It is part of a set of three volumes of 10-minute plays. One of the other volumes contains plays for 3 actors, and the other has pieces for 4, 5, or 6 actors.
The introduction to this book notes, "Over the past two decades, the ten-minute play has established itself as a potent and durable form in American theater." The editors further compare this genre to other short literary forms such as the editorial. They also note that the plays in this volume are all by American playwrights.
The thirty plays are a very diverse group. In this book can be found comedy, tragedy, fantasy, and surrealism. Here are brief descriptions of some of my favorites.
"Misreadings," by Neena Beber: an encounter between a college literature teacher and a rebellious student. "Off the Rack," by Robert D. Kemnitz and Jennifer McMaster: a dialogue between a woman and a professional closet organizer. "Guys," by Robert Badlam: a comic dialogue between a girl-hungry guy and his pal at a fast-food restaurant. "Precipice," by William Mastrosimone: the suspenseful story of two climbers in trouble on Mount Rainier. "Tape," by Jose Rivera: a "Twilight Zone"-ish dialogue between a seemingly imprisoned individual and an attendant; early on this play contains the ominous line, "We don't want to cause you an undue suffering."
But my favorite in the whole collection is "Trying to Find Chinatown," by David Henry Hwang. A hilarious and thought-provoking satire on Asian-American identity, it contains some terrific dialogue.
The only thing that disappointed me about this collection was the lack of any author bios. I would have liked to have had some information on these playwrights and on any other pieces they may have written. Still, this is a fine collection which I would enthusiastically recommend both for classroom use and personal reading.

Three fine books in the Smith & Kraus '30 10-Minutes Plays' series by Michael Dixon, et.al. present winners from the Actors Theatre of Louisville's national 'ten-minute play' contest, provide aspiring students and dramatists with a wide range of plays. These three volumes are divided into plays for 3 Actors (1-57525-278-3), 2 Actors (277-5) and 4, 5 & 6 Actors (279-1). Characters, settings, and details on obtaining performance rights accompany each sketch.

Just okay

These ten-minute plays are by far David Mamet material, but then again, who wants to be that cerebral! They're just okay; nothing great, nothing terrible. Great to take the actor out of his own head, but not enough to keep them enticed. If you have the others already, then it's an okay buy...But, if you're just now building your collection, this isn't a book I'd build my foundation upon.

The Good, the Bad

This e-galley was provided by Disney-Hyperion in exchange for an honest review.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: That synopsis is awfully misleading and spoiler-filled, considering the Earl of Westlake doesn't pass away until the end of act one. Additionally, it led me to believe we'd see Rose's POV and we never do. But that's me nitpicking a bit. My real criticisms entail the POV jumps and some of the romantic relationships. The POV changed nearly every chapter and there were a lot of characters who were seen. I would've liked to stick with one of them for longer than a chapter. Also, I wasn't happy with how all the relationships ended. I won't spoil too much but there are three things I want to address.
1. There are two characters who use the word love awfully fast; I did sense them developing feelings for each other, but I'm not sure love is the word I would've used so soon.
2. Georgiana has had a crush on Michael since book 1 and it's a bit weird to me, seeing as how they're step-siblings.
3. There was a character who was set up as Ada's love interest and I seriously thought there would've been a hint of a happily ever after with them (considering this is the final book in the series). I'm okay with Ada being independent and unmarried, but if you set up a relationship...don't leave your readers hanging!
I did enjoy, however, the perspectives of World War I that were in Emeralds & Ashes. There aren't too many books that feature the first world war, and I liked that we saw nurses, soldiers, and families affected. Also, one of my favorite parts of the entire series, and especially this book, has been Charlotte's character development. She used to be selfish and horrid and now she's loving, giving, and brave. Her happiness was a bright spot in the tragedy that was most of the Averley/Templeton family's existence in Emeralds & Ashes. Ada and Georgiana were great, as always. Those girls have lost both their parents, and they're still strong and great characters.
Language and romance are mild. Violence and injuries are perhaps the worst (descriptions of some of the things Charlotte sees in a hospital, what Sebastian faces in the war, etc.).

The Verdict: Such a great conclusion, although I wish the series wasn't ending here! I want more At Somerton adventures. And I'm very bummed that this conclusion is only available as an e-copy, considering I have Cinders & Sapphires and Diamonds & Deceit in hardcover.

Happy I finally purchased the ebook

What a good read. I'm so disappointed I will never have this book on my shelf with the others. After such a longtime in between books I thought if be lost, but I was able to remember the characters and follow along. My only complaint is that I wanted two of my favorite characters to come together in the end and that didn't occur.

The Bible of Morphology

This book is the Bible of Morphology, the most famous and reliable word-formation book in the world even now. As Marchand analyzed words based on OED, we can know the development of each type of compounding and each suffix in detail. I hope publishers will reprint this book before long :-)

About the Author
Alice Crocker has been living and teaching in Indonesia for over ten years. In addition to this title, she authored a publication called Foreigners Among Us, which is an English as a Second Language activity book that was used in Banda Aceh as an English course after the tsunami. What makes her an incredible teacher is her unassailable sense of humor. I am a magnet for the absurd. I have absurd thoughts, absurd people are drawn to me, and absurd things happen to me! she claims. She plans on continuing her writing career with a focus on helping others who will travel, work, and live in foreign countries assimilate better and have a more respectful, impactful attitude in their roles as living examples of what westerners are all about.

Hilarious!

This book is delightful! I giggled my way through it in just a few days because I couldn't put it down. Crocker has a knack for storytelling and finding the fun in everyday situations. Also included are great tips for any foreigner living abroad. A must-read!

Hilarious and Heartwarming

As a personal friend of the author I had heard some of these stories in her own voice. She is a gifted oral storyteller. When I heard that she was writing a book I wondered if her gift of creating a dynamic world through her own oral rhetoric would translate to the printed page. Some great tellers of stories do not have a knack for adapting the recitations into printed form.

I needed not to worry. Alice Crocker can both tell a story and convey it to the printed page. When the stories are not outright hilarious to the point of tears, they are genuinely heart-warming. Her tips for travelers are wonderfully insightful, and this book should be a must-have for anyone traveling in cultures not their own.

This book should make delightful reading for a wide variety of readers. The chapters are short and any of them can be picked up and breezed through for a quick moment of joy. There is only a slight linear narrative chronology to the book, meaning that a reader could begin reading at any point without missing too much in what has gone on before.

Love Thy Neighbor deserves a wide readership and is heartily recommended.

Honest, Hilarious, Heartwarming

This absolutely terrific book should come with a few warnings...such as...Once you pick it up, you will not be able to put it down, You'll want everyone you know to read it too so you may want to get more than one copy because you will need one to pass around among your friends but still have one to keep, and.. because a truly great story is one you never get tired of hearing, once you finish this book, you'll want to read it again and again. It is hilarious, beautifully honest, heartwarming and chock full of self deprecating humor. I love how Alice turns her cultural "blunders" into wonderful teachable moments for anyone interested in living cross culturally. Her love for Indonesia, its culture and people is so evident and each story beautifully illustrates how she not only learned to live successfully in a completely different culture, but how her humility, grace, courage, and ability to laugh at herself ingratiated herself into the hearts and lives of those she lives and works with. This book is an absolute must read for anyone interested in learning how to successfully live cross-culturally.
