A refreshing, inspiring story that I couldn't put down!
By Chris Kostman
I started reading this book during a busy work day. I pretty much couldn't put it down! I'd work for a few hours, take a break to read, and repeat. It's a serious page-turner!
Monica has a very refreshing voice and is extremely humble. She tells her life story without hiding anything, in simple terms, revealing her true essence in this remarkable book. She's also very insightful and pays attention to the little - and most important - things. From her childhood in Guatemala and Mexico to living and competing in sporting events all over the world, she has really paid attention as she's trod her path.
It would have been easy for her to simply focus on all the incredible endurance races she's done and regale us with the ups and downs of competing in the world's toughest races. But her story is so much more than that; it's a human story, one with tragedies and sadness and a few shocking turns of events. Athletics and adventure provide the framework to her adult life, but they aren't the exclusive focus. Instead, they help her find her own voice and give her the strength to take dramatic actions when the situation - for her and for her children - merit it. This is a woman who rebounds from childhood tragedy and adult tragedy, too. She picks herself up, dusts herself off, and moves forward in life. Her story is - and I hate to use this overused word, but it really applies - inspiring.
I'll be honest. I've known Monica a bit, because I'm the race director for the Badwater 135 Ultramarathon and the Furnace Creek 508 bicycle race, both of which Monica competed in and features in her book. I was very impressed with her when she did my races, but that appreciation has gone up immeasurably now that I know how far she has really come. Triathlon, running, and cycling races are nothing compared to the human race and Monica excels at that most of all.

Amazing
By Monica
Reading this amazing story really inspired me. In this story Monica tells us how achieving goals is so important for us. Lets us in into an amazing life story, but at the same time gives perspective about some of the most difficult races in the world. I really loved to read the story of this powerhouse woman.

Brilliant!!!!
By Amazon Customer
I have known Monica for 15 years and have shared some amazing adventures with her. I was so pleased when she contacted me with her plans to write this book. Monica has a great story to tell and she tells it brilliantly in 130000 Miles. I had the honor and privilege of writing the forward for this book and with Monica’s permission will share it here.
Forward
It’s high noon in Death Valley, California. It’s the middle of July, the hottest time of the
year, and the very spot where the highest temperature on the face of the earth was ever
recorded. Not too far away, my good friend Monica Fernandez is emptying the contents
of her stomach onto the searing blacktop of highway 190. She is less than 20 miles into
the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon, easily considered the toughest foot race on the
planet. My job as Monica’s support crew captain is quite simple, keep her hydrated,
fuelled, motivated - and alive for the next 30 plus hours until she reaches the finish line.
That finish line, however, is 8300 feet up Mount Whitney and clearly, given her current
condition, I’m failing.
Historically, Monica is not alone. This cruel 24-mile stretch of road between Furnace
Creek and Stove Pipe Wells has seen its fair share of runners and has destroyed the
dreams of many of the world’s toughest endurance athletes, including the likes of “ultramarathon
man” Dean Karnazes, two time Badwater champion Pam Reed, Navy SEAL
David Goggins and many more. Yet there she is. Determined as ever. And as the
temperature quickly approaches the daytime high of 120f, I am worried that Monica’s
name is soon to be added to the growing list of DNF’s (did not finish) - but Monica
clearly has other plans.
After heaving every ounce of desperately needed liquid, nutrition and electrolytes from
her gut, she wipes her face, drops a couple of F-bombs and does what she does best.
Monica digs deep into a place that very few people are willing to go and carries on down
the road.
I first met Monica eight years earlier at the Ultraman World Championships, a grueling
three-day, 320-mile swim/bike/run triathlon that circumnavigates the big Island of
Hawaii. It was 2000 and, having raced Ultraman the previous year, I had returned to
help a friend, David Secord, as some of the longer races have no aid stations and
require each athlete to provide their own support team. It was Monica’s first time
competing at Ultraman and she and her crew leaned on our veteran team for advice and
a few supplies. As a result, we were fortunate enough to spend many hours over the
three days of racing getting to know Monica and her crew. It was here that my respect
and admiration for Monica began and having remained close friends over the years – I
came to understand that she was far more than just a runner.
130000 miles shares such a story, chronicling Monica’s remarkable transformation from
that of a chronic smoker, puffing on two packs a day, to a world class endurance athlete,
national triathlon champion and Ultraman World champion. Yet it is only part of what
makes her story so captivating. Monica’s unlikely journey from her early days as a
happy child through the death of her parents at age ten and her troubled teen years to
what many believe is the ultimate endurance challenge - the Death Valley Cup - is much
more than running and triathlons. And though many might measure her greatest
accomplishments in miles, perhaps her biggest challenge had nothing to do with
athletics.
130000 miles is a story of determination, sacrifice, heartbreak, love, endurance,
courage, defeat and victory. Drawing on all she had learned as an elite athlete to free
herself and two young children from a psychologically abusive husband, Monica risked
her freedom to plot and execute a harrowing escape from a Muslim country with her two
children. It is in sharing such experiences that Monica bares her soul, as she details the
failures and successes that have helped shape the woman she is today, a champion
athlete, loving mother and self-directed business’ woman.
Whether you are a recreational runner training for your first 5k or a seasoned athlete, a
mother, a parent, or a business person, 130000 miles will inspire readers to push past
their own boundaries and discover their own true potential. Monica shows us that with
passion, dedication and sacrifice we are all capable of the extraordinary.
