Good, with reservations

My Dad, who had a good union job, was able to provide for our family with the wages and benefits the union helped him get. As a UPS employee in 1997, I had no problem with going out on the 16-day nationwide strike. I thought we deserved better pay raises and more full time jobs. I thought it bordered on being immoral that so many of my fellow UPS employees had to spend time away from their families, running around like chickens with their heads cut off to two and three part-time jobs. This book does a good job at defending the necessity of unions. The book also talks about "child labor" and how globalization can result in the exploitation of workers working in unsafe conditions in "sweat shops" for immoral wages.

My reservations with the book include its dismissal of conservatives who defend workers but won't go along with certain aspects of the liberal social agenda. For instance:

"The anti-globalization right, notably Pat Buchanan, still represents virulent opposition to the effort by women ... gays, lesbians, and other oppressed groups to attain full respect and equality. It represents an effort to suppress cultural diversity by imposing 'Christian' and/or 'family' values." (P.98)

Is the defense of the "full respect and equality ... (of) women" also a veiled defense of abortion? Are conservative defenders of exploited workers not wanted if they oppose so-called gay marriage?

One of the greatest defenders of the poor and exploited workers in 2014 is Pope Francis. Are his defenses not to be mentioned because he upholds the conservative moral teachings of the Catholic Church? The same could be asked of Pope Benedict XVI's words, and the words of the pope when this book was written, Pope John Paul II.

Are the words of former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum or Donald Trump favorable to workers to be dismissed because they won't sign on to aspects of the liberal social agenda?

There are alternatives to the status quo

Although globalization is an inevitable force thoughout modernity we can have a voice in how globalization is enacted. As citizens of the global community, we do not have to sit back and be content with the pathway of globalization that is defined by such global organizations as the WTO and the IMF in addition to transnational corporations and the American government.
"Globalization from Below" investigates the emergence of the anti-globalization social movement that targets the negative actions and consequences of various institutions and corporations in their effort to increase their profits and power. Unlike other social movements the anti-globalization movement is unique because it consists of a multitude of social agendas ranging anywhere from environmental to labor rights causes. Although they have differential agendas together they strive for the same objective of returning to a democracy of business decisions made by institutions that don't favor the status of the wealthy minority. The true promises of globalization never became realized. Instead social problems are increasingly becoming more intensified. The disparity between the rich and poor grows larger and the environment is under constant attack. Due to the decline of national power many previous hard-fought laws and regulations protecting consumers and workers are being overruled by global treaties and trade agreements. The influence of global capital and unregulated markets puts both humans and the planet in danger. In the midst of the rapid acceleration of globalization within the past century basic human rights often take a back seat.
This book is a good introduction to the anti-globalization social movement that continues to gain more momentum as individuals become increasingly aware of the dire and drastic consequences of the current trajectory of globalization. It's a short read but well worth it.

extremely repetitive

Though I really like the points brought out by this book, and Ithink they are very valid, they are continually repeated throughout. I think just having 10 pages or less would have given the same message. After reading the book front to back, I don't think all the pages needed to be wasted repeating and reiterating what was already very clear in the first chapter.

Great managers have to know a lot, and as the world gets more complicated, there's a lot more to know. Competent managers have good understandings of finance, marketing, sales, information systems, research and development, etc. But when assembling the hierarchy of what you need to know, I argue that your human resource management (HRM) knowledge should also be very close to the top, because if you're a manager with only a superficial grasp of the holistic HR process, you have an enormous blind spot that can seriously hamper your career advancement. 

I've seen managers muddle through for years because they were highly proficient in specific areas of expertise, but then suddenly everything implodes because they didn't know how to manage staff. And when the implosion occurs, it's invariably ugly. Often, the manager is caught totally unaware, thinking he, or she, had survived for 20 years and now--blam--my expertise has been trumped by operational dysfunction and a staff in revolt. 

In reality, such people got Peter Principled by being promoted into positions they were never fully qualified to hold. People without formal HR knowledge and training really shouldn't be put in charge of people until they shore up that weakness. Yet, untold tens of millions of people with no HR expertise have willingly, or unwillingly, been thrown into management roles where suddenly they don't know what they don't know.  

How can anyone expect them to be competent? Metaphorically, it's like expecting an electrician to wire a house properly with zero training; I wouldn't want to live in it! 

So let's look at what great managers know and know how to do; look at the unfamiliar points as development opportunities! And, they are covered in this human resource management book. Do you know:   

  • how to conduct job analyses: these enlighten businesses and organizations about the requirements of specific staff positions, and when you determine how many positions are needed and how much time each one requires to do in a given time period, you get  crucial information about precisely how many people are required to staff the organization--the Goldilocks formula, not too many staff, not too few, and each with just the right qualifications. Many organizations get this wrong and suffer accordingly.
  • what should be included in each job description/specification for each person you employ or manage so you know precisely what to look for in job applicants and so the person filling the position can perform the job to a high standard in a reasonable amount of time? Many organizations don't even have job descriptions and specifications for those jobs, a fact that explains a lot of performance issues, poor staff morale and generally cranky workplaces where people are confused about what they're supposed to do and about what they'll ultimately be evaluated on. Good job descriptions/specifications are perhaps the most important tools a manager can create and use.
  • the right ways and wrong ways to recruit and shortlist job applicants; do it the right way and you'll waste far less time and have far fewer costly failures
  • how job interviews should be conducted to ensure that you get the information you need? Job interviews are often done horribly; no process here can be disastrous.
  • how to orient new staff to get them off on the right foot? Orientation often means giving someone a brochure to read and showing them around in a two-hour blur of introductions. Next the new hire faces days or weeks of frustration trying to figure out how he/she fits in--bad for morale and a terrible waste of productivity.
  • how the recruitment and selection process, in concert with the job interview and orientation period, should yield valuable information about training needs (few new hires have 100% of the knowledge and skills needed to fulfill every job duty and responsibility). Knowing where gaps exist enables you to spot deficiencies and then plan training to avoid potentially costly errors and employee frustration.
  • how to structure and conduct performance evaluations; this is another area where a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. They should be properly planned and structured so that the people being evaluated leave the room feeling positive. If performance evaluations are the equivalent of visits to the dentist that don't result in improved performance, they aren't being done correctly.
  • what coaching and mentoring plans look like? These can elevate the morale and commitment of both new and old employees, but few organizations even attempt them. It's a basic rule of human psychology--virtually all people perform better when they believe their managers care about them.
  • what retention strategies are available and which work better than others? As the workforce changes in the coming years (retiring baby boomers and more immigrants) there is going to be fierce competition for qualified staff, so keeping your best people will be increasingly difficult.
  • how to keep up with the changing socio-economic-technological environment so employee skills remain current? This isn't easy in a world with seven billion people where new products and services emerge daily; if you have competitors, you need to stay abreast, or preferably ahead.
  • how to discipline employees, when needed, in ways that enable them to redeem themselves and to continue (or become) valued members of staff? (do it wrong and it can mean lawsuits)
  • how to terminate someone humanely and in a way that doesn't end up in court? This knowledge, too, can save you a lot of time, aggravation, stress, and money, not to mention perhaps deter an angry dismissed employee from seeking retribution--it happens. 
  • About the Author
    Steve Bareham worked in management capacities in journalism, public relations, and marketing for 25 years before joining the teaching staff at Selkirk College, Nelson, B.C. In 2005 he received the NISOD award for teaching and leadership excellence at North American institutions of higher education. (NISOD: National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development).

    At the time of writing, he is the administrator of the Golf Club Operations Online Certificate Program (GCOOL) and teaches human resources, business communication, critical thinking, and marketing to resort/hotel, ski, and golf management students enrolled in Selkirk's School of Hospitality and Tourism.

    Easy to read and kind of fun too!

    This was my Anthropology 101 textbook. Usually I hate reading textbooks, but this wasn't so bad at all. It read very easily and quickly and covered the concepts in a very simple, direct way. I didn't have to spend hours reading the assigned chapter, and was usually able to read a chapter in about twenty minutes. I have a friend who read this book just for fun, which is quite the praise for a textbook.

    Very Cute - 4.5/5 Stars

    I am such a sucker for cute kid's books and when they pertain to a special holiday, all the better for me. Naturally I couldn't resist this one: I Love Christmas, by Anna Walker, because I became acquainted with the lovable character Ollie, the zebra and his dog Fred, when I read, I Love My Dad, earlier this year.

    In this Christmas story, Ollie, the cutest zebra ever, is sharing his thoughts on Christmas -- which of course is a holiday that he loves! From the twinkly lights, crinkly paper, tinsel, angels and reindeer, to helping Nana bake the Christmas cake, Ollie the zebra is all excited about Christmas. He even dresses up his dog Fred as a reindeer in the bathtub. By far though, Ollies favorite thing to do is to listen for Santa with his pal Fred close by his side.

    The story is told in simple rhyme, and it is a perfect size for little ones to tote around. The author, Anna Walker has illustrated this book, and it features perfect simple scenes that would be easy to explain for even the youngest of toddlers. Older preschool children will also love this one.

    The sweet minimalist pictures and simple words still capture what is most special of the season. There are a few images that could lead to the more religious elaboration by a parent but are easily glossed over for those who prefer not to stress that aspect.

    a great overview

    This book provides an insightful and practical first look at the complex science of bolting. I found the first half of the book to be quite practical in familiarizing the reader with concepts that would be developed further in later sections. The author does a good job in giving the reader a look at several types of different design techniques, including the ones outlined by the german engineering society VDI. The book gives solid outlines to various design processes, but is not a textbook to tell you exactly how to design every joint. The reason for this is that bolted joints are extremely complex mechanical systems that are often simplified by quite conservative codified procedures. If the reader is looking for those codified design procedures, purchase books by the PVRC, ASME, etc. instead, but know that this book gives a wider perspective of the entire design process.

    Bickford is the man.

    Having read several books on the bolted joint, let me say that Bickford is the man. He's the father of bolted joint study. Don't waste your money on his other book which is a selection articles, this is the one to get.

    I give it 4/5 because it is very light on shear joints and could be written in a more concise manner. Also, to fully understand bolted joints, the IFI Inch Fasteners Standards book is also needed.

    Otherwise a totally solid intro to the bolted joint.

    A Must For Design Engineers

    This book covers all the fundamental issues related to bolts and bolted joints. It is very easy to read, and does not go too deeply into technical subjects, but gives the reader a full appreciation for the issues involved. As a materials engineer I appreciated the section on bolting materials. As a design engineer, I found the sections on designing bolted joints very helpful. As Plato expressed long ago, the wiser you are, the less you realize you know. After reading this book, design engineers not familiar with all the issues will likely not take bolts and bolted joints for granted.

    A Clear & Practical Channel

    Having read several of the books on beings from other star-systems, this is the one I found most practical and straightforward. The book is a compilation of channeled sessions by the author with groups and individuals. Since the sessions are taped and transcribed, the book gives a good sense of David Miller's channeled sessions, which I have heard several times and consistently found positive and useful. The entities he channels always seem to speak with the benefit of the listener in mind, and that compassionate wisdom comes through in this book. The choice of material for the book covers the title but also goes beyond it into related areas. The book's explanations of human spiritual evolution, our place in the cosmos, our connection with higher forces and the ascension process were both clear and uplifting. For anyone interested in writings by contemporary channels, this book is a very good place to start.

    I have read other books on channeling messages before, but this one was more profound to me than any other. Giving me, the opportunity to connect to the Arcturians by just using intent and visualization. I have read the book 2 times already, I just loved it! :)
