Budgets are not evil.

If you're afraid of budgets, read this book. It's written in everyday English, brief, easy to read, and will remove all mystery from budgeting.

Dated, but good on basics

Here's my quicky summary of this book:
1. An overall budget predicts income, expenses, and cash flow.
2. Don't bother building a budget if you're not going to look at actual spending and try to determine the cause of any variances. If the variances come from reasonable causes--as they almost always do--the budget must be changed to reflect the new conditions.
3. Researching and documenting assumptions are the key to good--and justifiable--forecasts and budgets. Don't budget based on pie-in-the-sky sales wishes or broadly-stated percentage increases over previous periods. What's going to increase and why?
4. An expense can be estimated from current and historical information, reasonable growth projections and timing estimates. It should include the effects of current or improved controls (approval processes, expense reports, centralized purchasing, appropriate categorization, etc.).
5. Working capital matters: set aside reserves, collect accounts receivable promptly, plan inventory and capital purchases, use controls. Use a Cash Flow Statement to project cash balances and avoid running out of cash.
6. When a variance occurs, determine whether the problem is due to a false assumption--in which case the budget must be revised--or a failure of controls--in which case, processes may need to be introduced.
This book is a bit dated. It seems unaware of spreadsheets and other computerized financial management tools. Even forgiving that, its proposed forms for changes and documentation seem a bit simplistic and therefore unhelpful.
On the other hand, it's a very good introduction to budgeting, and the main message ("Document your assumptions!!") seems like a great one to learn.

I bought this book as a replacement for the same book which I bought at a Radio Shack over 30 years ago. To this day, this book remains one of the best books on the subject since it presents all of the basic design principals in an easy to read fashion which is easily comprehended by the layman. No rocket science is required to understand this book, thanks to the author's very good writing skills! Even Gilligan of Gilligan's Island could build a decent sounding set of stereo speakers after reading this book.

Good Book. Some of the theory is over my head, I need to do some reading to get up to speed.

It helps me get started and i like the example projects. I am not good with mathematics. I start to lose the idea with formulas.
I would like to get a better understanding of the reasons behind the styles and methods to decide the best approach.
Equations don't help me much to understand (not good with math). This book may be more helpful to me after reading more
on the concepts of the different design choices. Seems there are so many variables to choosing the right design approach.

Still the Best Speaker Book for the Money!

I'm a big Weems fan! I bought the 1st edition ~25 years ago. I used the first edition to build dozens of Hi-Fi, Pro-Audio and Car loudspeaker systems. With my first edition getting pretty worn with use, so I recently purchased the 4th edition, and I am very pleased. There are other books, but Weems book is stell the best speaker book for the money!

The 4th edition has been edited to the fundamental information required to design loudspeakers. In addition, Mr. Weems added design information on 3rd and 4th order cross over networks and added the governing equations to determine fb, f3 and Vb for closed and vented boxes. The BASIC source code for programs to design speaker and cross overs is also provided. Yea, the BASIC code is a little dated since most operating systems don't have a BASIC interpreter these days. I would like to see the programs downloadable (preferably in VB), but I have used the source code and the equations to write make my own VB application.

Weems provides both exact solutions (for math lovers), and the "minimal math" approach as well. Either way, you need to do "some" math to correctly design a loudspeaker enclosure. Most folks, who have mastered high school algebra and can solve simple equations, should be able to use the charts and graphs and design boxes and cross over networks.

I recommend this book for everyone from pro's to beginners. For the Physicists and Engineers out there, you may be a little disappointed that the derivation of the solutions are not presented. For beginners, if the design task seems overwhelming, this book will provide a great foundation to buy a kit from one of the online retailers. Either way, if I had to choose one speaker building book, this would be the one.

The second time I read this book and it was still good. I remembered reading it and just loved the love triangle between the characters. They were hot and sort of realistic. It was enough of a story to leave you wanting more. I'm going to get more by this author.

This is a quick fun read. What do you do when you're in love with someone who doesn't let you seduce him. You fall for someone else who might possibly seduce both of you. Entertaining and interesting short hot read. Enjoy I did.
