I have read a couple sample guidelines on Fire Engineerings forum and on fireopsonline.com. I like how they take complex topics and break them down to the simplest formats. As a volunteer firefighter, I couldnt imagine a book with more useful information. I cant wait to get my copy. (Steve Weston)

What every Officer needs!!!

This book is one that every officer needs to have with them on the rig and around the fire house. This is a tremendous book to set up operational training and to perpare yourself along with your crew to carry out safe and productive operations. This book deals with all types of senerios and how to break them down, along with the tactial worksheet.

Another great tool

The authors do a fantastic job of creating an easy to follow guideline to running a job. It won't teach you how to put out a fire (if you need that info grab another book first) but if you already can it will give you a checklist of things to do and an order for doing them that will make you a more efficient officer.

Good insight on how to create an innovation mindset

The book is a guide on how to develop an innovation culture inside an organization. Industry agnostic, and with a lot of good examples, it illustrates the main steps an organization should take to gain a competitive advantage through innovation. Its focus is on new concepts like crowd sourcing and openness to customers, employees and even competitors rather the traditional secrecy of the R&D department, and has a broad perspective on innovation, not simply NPD. I recommend it to anyone interested in innovation management.

If your firm's strategy can be applied to any other firm, you don't have a very good one.

Imagine that your organization is an innovation powerhouse. Imagine that other companies adopt your strategies and not the other way around. Imagine that every single person in your organization is hailed as an innovator. Too good to be true right?

Not so.

Author Rowan Gibson and Peter Skarzynski set out to jumpstart your innovation efforts in their book Innovation to the Core. Distilled from various examples of companies that 'DO' innovation, they present a blueprint that we can use and also 'DO' innovation. But before you set out to 'DO' innovation you want to start with creating the conditions to foster innovation, then develop the skills you need to innovate and then a process to bring it all together and produce new products and services. Innovation to the core shows you how!

Pragmatic is the key word to describe the contents of this book, written as a guide this is THE best book I've read on enterprise innovation and have recommended it more times than I can remember. I actually used the chapter on business model innovation to give a friend of mine a big picture view of his online car sales business and brainstorm new approaches to compete.

If you're familiar with Gary Hamel's work from Competing for the Future, Leading the Revolution and The Future of Management you will absolutely want to read Innovation to the Core. Most of those insights are presented here in such a simple way that any startup or lone entrepreneur, small business that wants to grow, the mid-size business and the corporate juggernauts can put to use.

Great for Review on Interview Skills

I am currently unemployed, so I figured that I needed to get some reference books to help with job searching in this new digital era. I came across this book because I was looking for information on phone interviewing. While it does not have much about that topic, it does give you good talking points for interviews. It is not a script, but it gives you what interviewers are looking when they ask a certain questions. The book is a quick read, with the chapters divided by the question that is asked. It is a good book for those who need a refresher in interview skills.

Great book and very practical!

This is a great book, Ray Deck III has made it possible for every person to be creative. By looking at creativity more as a learned skill and less as a gift this book provides practical and DAILY exercises that will assist you and me in our creativity. I highly recommend this book.

Abundant creativity help for us non-creatives

I've said for a while now that there's not a creative bone in my body. If 1 out of 5 people are a "creative" and I'm in a room with 4 other non-creatives, I'm still not the creative and the statistic is broken.

RayDeck3 has an uncanny ability to take the non-creative like myself on an unbelievably easy brain-expanding exercise in creativity. This book has helped me not only try to think outside the box, but imagine a new box, invent the box, build the box, and then come up with several new ways to market the box. Ray's writing style is both simple and profound.

I am sure that this book will be a regular resource of mine for years to come. Don't pass it up.

Think, Dream, Act ... Create

This little book does deliver what the title promises ... one hundred discussions on the nuts and bolts of creativity. Some are repetitive in nature and purposefully so, the act of creating is a full of repetition. Though most of the concepts were not new to me, I found the book to be enjoyable and at times actually thought provoking.

This is a subject of lifelong fascination for me. What drives us to create and the paths we travel to do so. I approached this book not necessarily needing help with coming up with ideas. -- I currently have enough of them to keep a cloned team of five busy for a few lifetimes as it is. -- It was more for the chance to explore other perspectives on what creativity is. However, if I did ever need help getting the ideas flowing some of the sections may indeed prove quite helpful. And not just with the start up point of a project, there are topics covered to help you move along the course all the way to completion. As well as some tips on how to move straight on to your next endeavor.

I would happily recommend this book to anyone who is perhaps a little nervous about taking those first steps to bring an idea from concept to tangible product.

About the Author
Wally Turnbull received his BA in Psychology from Rockford College in 1970 and his MFA in photography from Ohio Univeristy in 1972. He was born and raised in Haiti where he resided until 1963 when he left to pursue his education. He returned to Haiti in 1972 with wife Betty and has since worked in rural education and self-help.

In 1978, Turnbull received a Diplome de Citation from the Haitian Government Department of Education for his work in rural education. He also received an award of distinction from Rockford College in 1983 for his humanitarian work in Haiti. The couple has three children, all of whom were born and raised in Haiti.

I have been to Haiti five times and each time I leave with mission to learn Creole. This has been the best book I have found yet. I have also purchased the online class call Haiti Hub. My friend and I have been studying each week and I hope the next time I go back I will be able to communicate better! The book makes it easier to understand learning Creole.

a great intro to Haitian Creole

I recently took a trip to Haiti, and in preparation for the trip I used the Creole Made Easy materials, including the Pronunciation Guide cd, and the Workbook. I used all three of them together, so I'll review them together as well.

Creole Made Easy is an excellent introduction to the Haitian Creole language. It provides the basic building blocks in terms of grammar and sentence structure from which to go further. This book is not an "emergency Creole" book, and didn't have anything by way of greetings, phrases to use while traveling, etc. Being in Haiti, those things were very easy to pick up, especially with some of the basic grammar under my belt. The Workbook is split into two sections, the first with exercises that correspond to each of the 16 lessons in Creole Made Easy. The second half of the workbook has more practical lessons like: numbers/time, months/days/seasons/weather, colors, family/friends, marketplace/food, around the house, and health and medicine. Indispensable to learning any foreign language is listening to it, and the Pronunciation Guide cd was excellent in that regard. I found that it was great practice for listening to the native speakers (though even then, I was listening too slowly most of the time) and great for understanding how to pronounce all of those nasal sounds. There were a couple of moments of frustration in using Creole Made Easy: there were a couple of misspellings; sometimes a word or phrase was used seemingly out of nowhere and wasn't listed in the mini-dictionary in the back of the book; a couple times a grammatical structure or phrasing was used and I had no idea why it was used that way, and it wasn't explained. This happened very few times, and can sometimes be a good problem-solving exercise that you need good practice for when trying to have actual conversations with Haitian people.

Of the eight people who went with me on my trip to Haiti, I was one of two who used Creole Made Easy, and the only one who completed all 16 lessons. I think some of the others used the Pimsleur cds (not any books). I was by far the best Creole speaker/listener and felt like I was in a perfect position to learn exponentially more while I was there. I was told over and over again "ou pale Creole byen!" ("you speak Creole well!") which I shrugged off for awhile until it began to sink in that this was true. Also, I wish I would have brought Creole Made Easy along with me instead of the Hippocrene Haitian Creole/English dictionary, because I think the dictionary in the back had a better selection of words and phrases I wanted to say. The Hippocrene has no phrases at all, and often didn't have the words I was looking for. All this said, I would strongly recommend the Creole Made Easy materials to anyone interested in learning Haitian Creole.

It totally enhanced the computer program I had taken and completed and gave new explanations for easier retention. The dictionary part of it is excellent and it is small enough to fit in your backpack.

I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

I really enjoyed this story. I liked that it was not an instant love connection. These stories are a good balance of romantic relationship and friendship. There was both give and take between the two characters and the sex was very hot.

Simon has been burned too many times and he is gun-shy when it comes to trust and developing relationships. He has a horrible family, that I wish had more to do with this story. I felt the situation could have been resolved more. While he is successful in all that he does, his wealth and status seem to be a deterrent for developing meaningful romantic relationship. But, Simon has amazing friends. And, when they set him up with Adrian, sparks not only fly, they catch fire.

Adrian is an amazing man. He is deaf, but that is only a part of what makes him so awesome. I wish that we had more about him in this story - what he does for the community of people he serves. I also wished that we knew more about his mom. She was talked about a lot, but nothing was really resolved in regard to her role and place in Adrian's life.

Overall, this was a sweet story that developed over a good amount of time. It had the previous characters in the story and created an even more awesome look inside this tight knit family. But, this story also left me wanting more development. I felt that O'Riley touched on a lot of things that could have been expounded on, but weren't. So, in the end, while it's a sweet story, I was left with a feeling of, "huh, guess that's it."

Really liked this book!

So you get Simon with this book who was hurt in a previous relationship so he is leery of being in a relationship again.
Then there was Aiden who is deaf and a IT professor who used to date Chase and is now good friends with him. There was a definite attraction between these two as soon as they meet at Chase's dinner party. So you know when you are reading a book and you feel like something is going to happen and it builds up... But then everything wraps up so neatly that you are left there thinking that was it. Unfortunately that is what I felt after reading this book. But do not get me wrong because I really did like the attraction between these two and the steam was off the charts hot! The way Aiden cared so much for Simon and the way Simon cared so much for Aiden that he went out and took classes just so he communicate better with Aiden. I just was expecting something big to happen so I kind of felt like that was wrapped up a little too nicely for me. But other then that I did love the character this author created and the authors pretense of this story.

So all together I really did like this book between the sweet and the steam between Simon and Aiden!

Sings of Desire

When Chase convinces Adrian to come out for drinks, he doesn’t expect Chase to play matchmaker. And when he meets Simon, there’s an instant attraction but Adrian’s tried dating Hearing men before and hasn’t had much luck. Plus, Simon has his own issues and not looking to be in another relationship. Even with their own problems, the two can’t help but want to spend time together but someone’s determined to break them up. Will they be able to get passed the hurdles that seem to be inevitable when it comes to their relationship or will their insecurities and doubts be the downfall for them?

I really enjoyed this one. I absolutely loved Adrian as a character because he was confident and very comfortable in his own skin, which meant him being Deaf didn’t make him vulnerable. At the same time, I liked that Simon was willing to learn sign language for Adrian because it showed how serious he was for Adrian from the start. Add to that, I liked that Adrian wasn’t after Simon’s money and he proved that to Simon over and over. Together, they were such a cute couple and I just loved reading about them!

This was probably my favorite of the series so far but there was too much sex for my tastes. Aside from that, there wasn’t much of a conflict, IMO, so I felt like the story was a little too ‘easy’. With the way the other stories were, I expected something more…. intense towards the end. But I felt like the conflict was still unsolved a little (such as who took the picture of Simon).

Even so, I really enjoyed this one. I loved that Adrian being deaf didn’t make him a victim and that Simon was so willing to learn sign language for Adrian. They were adorable together and it was great seeing everyone else again. Definitely looking forward to the next book in this series!!!

Great Present for Baby!

All of the teachers got together to purchase a variety of books for another teacher's expected baby. This book was the most well received in the bunch!

As a math teacher, I am very critical of baby books that are about math. This one is amusing for adults with a bit of know-how and has brightly colored graphics to go along with the story of the "other" kinds of geometries.

I will now ALWAYS purchase this book for little babies!

Cute math book for little kids

I usually hate all the toys that come in their regular color or pink, with the assumption being that girls can only play with pink toys, but since this is a math book and the description says it's perfect for babies who prefer pink (as opposed to saying it's perfect for girls) it's fine. I'm not sure my baby prefers pink over blue, but he loves Angelina Ballerina and Bratz and a bunch of other girly cartoons, so he got the pink version.

Anyway, so far my 2.5yo baby boy has been pointing at the circles and points and lines and saying "circle", "point", "line", or one of the various colors. I don't think he's really 'getting' any of the geometry yet (Euclidean or non), but he's having fun. And that was the point of the book, right? It has some fun word play "Angle one is a cute little angle" and "Those four angles look all right to me" that is lost on little kids but makes me smile every single time I read it to my son.

My only problem with the book is that it's a roughly 8.5" by 8.5" paperback, which makes it pretty vulnerable near babies/toddlers. It really would be better if it were a boardbook. Then I'd be able to leave it out for the kids to look at themselves whenever they feel like it, and I wouldn't have to keep reminding my son to be gentle with it while I'm reading it to him.

Awesome Book!

This is a fantastic book. I bought this for my 10 month old. At that age she could only sit still while I read it to her for about half the book but now that she's a a little over 1 year, she is happy turning the pages and letting me read it to her pretty much all the way through.

The concepts laid out in the book are fantastic. I thoroughly enjoy that the author starts with basic geometric ideas and then builds on why these may or may not be the whole story. This is a great way to teach young children. As a result, I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone looking for an entertaining and highly educational way to introduce their child to higher level's of spatial reasoning!
